Buick Regal GS AWD: Buick gets it right

At 12, I wanted to be a car designer. Fate however had different plans for me. With an eye for automotive design, I grew up loving Buicks; from the ’57 Special to the ’59 Invicta, with the ’64 Wildcat stealing my heart time and again. Cadillacs took a close second, Fords were ok but I found Chevs too feminine. Buicks, were masculine with broad shouldered front fenders and creased lines, personifying the designing cues of GM greats, Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell.
Then came the Riviera. One snowy December afternoon as I headed to my post office, there on St. Lawrence Boulevard, with six inches of snow on the ground sat a ’65 Riviera. My heart skipped several beats and I must have studied its lines for what seemed like an eternity.
Well into the ‘70s there were some noteworthy designs that came out of Buick’s design studios however, the last four decades have been anything but exciting. That has all changed with the launch of the Regal GS – the sexiest Buick to come out of Detroit in, well the last four decades.    
The Grand Sport designation is nothing new to the Buick line up, having been associated with ‘70s era muscle cars but this is the first time that it has been used in a European sports sedan context. The stylish GS goes up against some well established rivals like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES, BMW 3 series and the like, a tough field to say the least. The Regal GS is more than just good looks, it’s a bona fide sports sedan. In fact a rebadged, German built, Opel Insignia, so the GS starts with the right genes. European engineered handling makes it the best tarmac gripping Buick ever.

While different drive options/trim levels are available elsewhere around the globe, we Canucks get only one trim/drive option- also the most desirable one - the all-wheel-drive version motivated by the 310 horsepower DOHC, 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing punching out 282 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic.

The all-wheel-drive gets a torque vectoring rear axle, which only improves traction in slippery conditions and makes the Buick eat up the corners. Buick has also given us three driving modes to choose from, Touring, Sport and GS 
Inside you’ve got one color choice, black. The supportive Recaros have a massage feature as well as being heated/cooled. Truth be told the SUV market has also changed over the last decade with SUVs growing increasingly larger, just like the population. Subaru appears to have been ahead of its time back in 2005 when 3-row SUV’s didn’t proliferate our roads, and minivans still reigned supreme for getting the platoon to school. But times have changed and so the new Ascent is the company’s answer to the latest trend.

The Ascent is also Subaru’s largest vehicle to date, with 142 mm longer wheelbase and 134 mm longer in length than the Tribeca, so yes passenger comfort has been greatly increased. The midsize SUV is built on the company’s Global Platform, a chassis that is easily adaptable; serving as the basis for everything from their Impreza and Crosstrek to the Ascent.

Available in four trim levels – Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier - with the entry level 8-passenger Convenience starting at a meager $36,695. My tester, the Premier trim comes only with the second row captains chairs. While all trims get heated front buckets it’s only the two higher trims that pamper their second row passengers with heated outboard seats. The third row looks a lot more inviting than some of it’s competitors but it’s still on the tight side with limited leg room. Still bear in mind this is a mid-size seven passenger and the seats are padded and comfortable to keep the small fry happy for longer drives. Oh and a pair of third-row USB charging ports become available in the Limited trim and are in addition to the standard two you’ll find in the front and second rows.

Whether you’re out in the boonies or negotiating city streets, the Ascent doesn’t feel like a large bulky SUV. With above average handling and a minimum of body roll for a three-row SUV, Subaru’s use of the boxer engine and its advantageous low center of gravity immediately become apparent. It’s stable, with a soft luxurious ride and is generally quiet during normal highway cruising. But it does get loud when pushed hard.

Is it perfect?
The drone of the CVT does get annoying but once you get passed that, the Ascent is typically Subaru; it does everything what it’s supposed to and does it well. I averaged 9.8L/100 km which is unprecedented in a 7-passenger sport ute. It may not be overly luxurious but you get what you pay for. I know my Subaru driving friends will all be looking at the Ascent when the time comes to turn in their current drives, and that alone will keep this big Subaru around for a long time to come.

Mais elle est quand même récente au Canada. Au départ, elle n’était pas commercialisée chez nous parce que Honda voulait qu’elle se distingue surtout en Californie vu qu’il était possible de l’obtenir en version à pile à combustible à l’hydrogène, question de concurrencer Toyota avec sa Mirai et d’autres constructeurs qui semblaient vouloir se lancer dans cette aventure «écologique». Ainsi, le véhicule peut rouler bien souvent suffisamment pour couvrir la distance nécessaire pour les déplacements nécessaires. Au moins, le conducteur n’a pas à s’inquiéter s’il doit aller un peu plus loin, le moteur à essence s‘occupera du reste. C’est ainsi que fonctionne la Honda Clarity.
Dans le cas de mon essai d’une semaine, tout s’est déroulé à merveille. Je n’ai que des éloges à faire aux ingénieurs de Honda pour leur travail. Pour le reste…après les fleurs, il peut y avoir un pot qui suit!

Mais avant de continuer avec la Clarity, il y a une question que je me pose. Lorsque l’électrification de l’automobile a commencé à émerger comme la solution tant attendue pour faire la lutte à la pollution causée par les moteurs à explosion, tous les observateurs se sont tournés vers les constructeurs japonais afin de voir jusqu’à quel point ils allaient battre la concurrence vers la production d’autos électriques. Après tout, n’était-ce pas Nissan qui avait pris le monde par surprise avec sa spectaculaire Leaf toute électrique? Mais après…plus rien. Les constructeurs japonais semblent plutôt s’être tournés que vers la configuration hybride et ce, que sur des automobiles plus petites et des berlines dont la popularité commençait à décliner.
Aujourd’hui, la propulsion toute électrique semble acquise chez les Américains et les Européens. Mais, on dirait que les constructeurs japonais ne commencent qu’à s’y intéresser! Ils n’ont même pas commencé à regarder du côté des pick-up électriques! Bizarre, n’est-ce pas?

De retour à la Clarity, je vous laisse juger de vous-même du style de la berline. On dirait que les designers de la Clarity ont voulu lui donner un look un peu futuriste mais là où la majorité des observateurs en arrivent à la même conclusion, c’est aux passages de roue arrière qui n’ont pas d’arc ! On dirait un retour aux années soixante. Toutefois, le reste de la voiture est plaisant à regarder.

L’intérieur de la Clarity est une autre découverte. On y retrouve encore une fois l’effet futuriste qui est plus ou moins réussi. Ce n’est pas tant les lignes de l’habitacle ni celles du tableau de bord qui m’ont paru «futuristes» mais plutôt les commandes, l’instrumentation et certains détails qui sortent de l’ordinaire mais qui n’impressionnent pas plus que cela. Néanmoins, je me suis habitué à la disposition de ces commandes (incluant le sélecteur de vitesses à la console qui est pareil à celui de l’Acura TLX de l’essai de la semaine dernière avec ses boutons-pressoirs! ). Évidemment, l’instrumentation y est entièrement informatisée mais au moins, contrairement aux centres d’information des plus récentes Acura, tout y est plus facilement lisible. Mentionnons que la plupart des commandes au tableau de bord sont aussi dédoublées sur le volant qui, heureusement, n’en est pas trop encombré.
Curieusement, alors que certains reportages semblaient vanter le confort des sièges, ce fut tout le contraire pour moi. J’ai trouvé le coussin du fauteuil très ferme, une remarque que m’a passé ma compagne lors de notre première randonnée. Il est devenu même inconfortable au bout de deux heures de route. Je ne trouvais plus de position au volant. Quant à ma compagne, elle m’a signalé une bosse dans le plancher (qui m’a rappelé celle des Camaro des années soixante que GM avait créée pour faire de la place au catalyseur sous la voiture) qui n’aidait pas à prendre une position plus relaxante. De plus, les tapis de caoutchouc étaient très glissants et il était difficile de se replacer en poussant des pieds!

Toutefois, même si les sièges d’arrière n’étaient pas plus confortables, au moins, ils procuraient suffisamment de place aux jambes des occupants surtout si les occupants d’avant ne reculent pas leur siège au maximum. Jugez-en de vous-mêmes sur la photo (cinq personnes peuvent prendre place à bord de la Clarity).

En ce qui a trait au coffre, il est quand même utile avec une certaine profondeur qui permet d’y glisser des objets encombrants. Vous aurez certes remarqué cette petite lunette supplémentaire placée sous la ligne de ceinture de l’auto. Elle peut devenir utile en manœuvres de stationnement mais je me fie plus à la caméra de recul!

Techniquement, toutefois, la Clarity est intéressante. Cette auto à traction avant est mue par un moteur électrique de 181 chevaux avec une batterie de 17 kWh combiné à un petit moteur thermique à quatre cylindres à cycle Atkinson qui développe 103 chevaux. Une fois combinés, ces deux moteurs affichent une puissance totale (calculée selon une méthode spécifique aux véhicules hybrides) de 212 chevaux. La boîte de vitesses est plutôt une transmission à variation continue (CVT) mais son fonctionnement nous donne des sensations de boîte auto régulière. On peut même y passer les «rapports» avec les palettes au volant. Comme c’en est le cas pour plusieurs véhicules aujourd’hui, le conducteur a la possibilité de choisir entre les modes de fonctionnement régulier, économique et sport. La direction est à assistance électrique et les freins sont à disques.
Sur la route
En général, conduire un produit Honda est une expérience plaisante. La Clarity n’y échappe pas mais il y a certains petits aspects qui pourraient devenir agaçants. Par exemple, pour une voiture de ce prix, je me serais attendu à moins de bruits des pneus (des Continental d’hiver sur jantes de 18 pouces) sur l’autoroute. Il y a certes un manque d’isolation…Question performance, passer du point mort à 100 km/h demande environ huit secondes alors que les reprises peuvent être un peu timides selon les circonstances. Mais là où la Clarity excelle, c’est en conduite urbaine.
Dès le départ, il faut le dire, la Clarity est plus appréciable en ville. Son ensemble électrique peut fonctionner sans l’aide du moteur thermique jusqu’à environ 75 kilomètres ce qui serait amplement suffisant pour des déplacements d’une journée en condition urbaine. Lorsque le moteur thermique doit entrer en action, il le fait avec discrétion et efficacité. Remarquez qu’il ne sert presque qu’à produire de l’électricité pour le moteur électrique. Rarement il ne devrait être en contact direct avec le reste de la mécanique.  Le temps pour recharger la batterie (si elle est vraiment à plat) variera d’environ deux heures et demie si la prise est de 220 volts à une dizaine d’heures avec une prise de 110 volts (ce qui pourrait être nettement suffisant pour un usage courant).
Malgré les quelques notes négatives que j’ai pu apporter à cette auto, la Clarity pourrait s’avérer un bon achat ne serait-ce que par la qualité de construction démontrée par Honda (la Clarity est assemblée au Japon). Toutefois, elle peine à se faire adopter par la clientèle nord-américaine (à peine 744 unités ont trouvé preneur au Canada en 2020, une baisse comparativement aux 911 unités de 2019 selon GCBC) qui est plus axée vers les camionnettes et les VUS de tout gabarit. Pire encore, je n’ai aucune idée de la valeur de revente (et surtout de la facilité de revente) de cette auto après quelques années. Pourtant, elle devrait correspondre à ce qui est considéré comme la formule la plus efficace de propulsion automobile au niveau de sa consommation. Justement, en ce qui concerne celle-ci, mes déplacements mi-autoroute, mi-ville m’ont donné une consommation (calcul à la pompe) de 4,326 l./100 km ! Cette seule observation serait suffisante pour justifier l’attrait envers la Clarity.
Ce qui n’aide surtout pas à sa popularité, c’est son prix (assez élevé pour son gabarit) de 46 320 $ qui peut aller jusqu’à 50 320 $ pour la finition Touring dont il est question ici. Évidemment, il y aurait, selon Honda, des rabais incitatifs de 8000 $ au Québec et de 5000 $ du gouvernement fédéral pour la version traitée dans ce reportage pour un total de 13 000 $. Mais encore, faut-il plaire aux clients.
Ce n’est pas toujours facile de «critiquer» une voiture aussi «avant-gardiste» que la Clarity. Ici, je ne peux que vanter l’ensemble «technique» de l’auto. C’est plus au niveau du design et de certaines observations de l’intérieur que je suis plus sévère. Puis, il y a le choix du marché. Une telle auto pourrait paraître excitante au Québec…mais ça demeure une auto…pour un continent plus intéressé par les «camionnettes» !
Une courte visite chez PBK
Cette période de confinement de la pandémie m’empêche de visiter, tout comme vous, des amis et des personnes intéressantes, surtout celles qui gravitent dans notre monde de l’automobile. Toutefois, il y a quelques semaines, vacciné et bien «armé» de mon masque, je me suis arrêté chez Patrick Briand de Laval, cet artiste qui peint des casques de course (de hockey, de football et autres sports) sous le nom de PBK ( https://www.facebook.com/PBKreation).
Patrick, le fils d’un de mes bons amis, a ce petit atelier derrière sa maison de Laval où il crée des peintures incroyables sur des casques protecteurs ce qu’il fait durant ses moments libres lorsqu’il n’est pas à peindre de véritables avions de ligne! De nombreux pilotes locaux et américains lui ont confié leur casque, un élément qui les distingue des autres pilotes lors d’une présentation.

Patrick est l’image même du type d’artiste qui produit de tels chefs d’œuvre. Seul dans son petit atelier, il s’affaire avec minutie à créer des designs uniques qui ne passeront certes pas inaperçus. Toutefois, toute image vaut (plus de) mille mots. Allez faire un petit tour à sa page Facebook et, surtout si vous êtes un pilote ou un sportif ayant besoin d’un casque original, pourquoi ne pas entrer en contact avec cet unique Lavallois. Plutôt qu’encourager un «étranger», pourquoi ne pas confier vos rêves à un artiste québécois ?

Montréal? Pas facile!
J’ai encore eu besoin, une autre fois, de rouler dans Montréal pour des courses personnelles. En fait, j’ai roulé de Laval à la Petite Italie (boulevard Saint-Laurent) en plein…samedi après-midi.
Mais qu’a-t-on fait des grands boulevards de Montréal? Ils ont rapetissé à cause de voies cyclables (très larges) qui retirent des voies de circulation ce qui oblige les automobilistes à n’utiliser qu’une seule voie! Résultat? Des bouchons que l’on voit normalement lors des heures de pointes sur semaine! C’est ce que sont devenues les rues Saint-Denis, Christophe Colomb et autres. Même les petites rues latérales ont leur propre piste cyclable ! Mais avons-nous vraiment besoin d’autant de pistes cyclables?
Et les lignes peintes sur le pavé…Elles s’effacent en moins de quelques semaines. Je ne vois pas l’utilité de les faire repeindre chaque année parce qu’il faut que les municipalités utilisent des peintures «écologiques» qui disparaissent presque au soleil! Un spécialiste de la réparation du revêtement pavé me disait qu’il y avait des produits nettement supérieurs sur le marché qui devraient durer beaucoup plus longtemps mais qu’il est impossible de convaincre les fonctionnaires de les utiliser parce qu’ils coûtent plus cher! Ils coûtent plus cher à l’achat mais ils durent plus longtemps! Pourquoi ne pas les adopter? La main-d‘œuvre pour appliquer des peintures plusieurs fois supplémentaires ne coûte-t-elle pas plus cher, elle? La situation est encore plus loufoque dans Laval surtout sur le boulevard Saint-Martin entre le boulevard des Laurentides et l’autoroute 25 où l’on repeint les lignes chaque année alors que très peu de cyclistes n’utilisent les voies cyclables sur le boulevard alors qu’il y a déjà une autre piste cyclable le long du trottoir… «Your tax money at work»!
Décidemment, alors que l’on croit améliorer la qualité de l’air en voulant diminuer l’utilisation des véhicules moteurs en ville, à mes yeux, on la rend plus mauvaise en forçant les automobilistes à rouler au pouce à pouce et en causant des embouteillages polluants pour respecter des pistes cyclables à peine utilisées (allez constater de vous-mêmes sur Saint-Martin !).
Ce n’est pas le bien des citoyens que l’on veut! Ce sont leurs votes! Et l’on se plaint après que les gens fuient Montréal et que la ville se vide! Pas surprenant! C’est mon opinion…et je la respecte!

2020 Genesis G70 2.0T Manual Test Drive: A Dissatisfying End to a Species

It always feels a bit odd to drive a dead car walking—a new car that's still available on dealer lots, but just recently received its official execution date from the automaker. It's different from dealing with a special edition; the very core of a limited run is its ephemerality. But the end of a bloodline whether sudden or scheduled feels melancholic, even if the car isn't that great.
As you probably guessed, the last time this happened to me was during a stint test driving the 2020 Genesis G70 2.0T with the six-speed manual transmission. While spraying the bright blue four-door down at a car wash ahead of a photo shoot, I received a text from a coworker informing me of the three-pedal G70's demise after the 2021 model year, bringing the curtain down on the enthusiast-focused version of the compact executive four-door after just three model years.
2020 Genesis G70 2.0T: Show Me The Money Even to one of the few who did snag a six-speed G70 before the axe came down, this news should hardly come as a shock. Genesis sold fewer than 12,000 G70s in 2019, and has sold only 5,275 units as of July 2020, illustrating just how small a slice of the segment the G70 managed to carve, especially when compared to the 47,827 3 Series models BMW sold in 2019—and those numbers are for all G70s (and 3 Series variants), not just those bought with a manual transmission.
But BMW isn't selling manuals in this segment, either—the German automaker nixed the manual 3 Series from its lineup with the introduction of the G20-generation for 2019. If BMW can't justify a manual 3 Series due to disappointing sales, what do you reckon the take rate is for the G70 with the 6MT?
In all likelihood, the figures are abysmal. Now, if you want to pick up a new premium sedan with three-pedals, your options are…well, shoot. There aren't any more options. Turns out, the G70 was the last to the party, and the last to leave. Don't think you can find shelter in the warm embrace of a well-equipped six-speed Honda Accord either; production of the shift-it-yourself Accord halted back in December of last year, and no one noticed until Honda publicly announced the death knell for the manual Accord, along with the demise of the Civic Coupe and cheeky Fit.
So, not only was I driving a zombie car, but it was the last gasp of an endangered species that used to be multitudes. At least it went out with a bang, right? Surely there's consolation in the fact I could declare the six-speed G70 criminally underrated and press most of the blame on the shoulders of a driving public more interested in their phones than the journey.
2020 Genesis G70 2.0T: Mixed Signals It is with a heavy heart I report the manual-equipped, rear-wheel drive sports sedan winks out with peaky power, a deceptively numb clutch, rev hang, and a dull shifter. Had I not received news of the stick-shift G70's demise, my advice to interested parties is that they don't bother; just pick up the 2.0T with the mostly inoffensive, though only average eight-speed automatic transmission, or make the financial jump to the potent 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 G70 3.3T, which is—of course—only available with an automatic transmission.
Before we dive into what makes the six-speed G70 disappointing, let's take a second to appreciate the G70's merits outside of the rubbery stick protruding from the center console, lest you think the car is simply a sum of its parts. As we've discovered with every other configuration of the G70, Genesis developed quite the sports sedan here, with excellent balance and overtly handsome aesthetics that would be a welcome sight coming from any brand. It's well designed, well equipped, comfortable  both to drive and to ride in, and if you spring for the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6, a potent contender for the pedestal spot occupied by the BMW 340i and Audi S4.
Overall, it's a tidy car that's a valid alternative to anything else in the ultra-competitive luxury compact executive sedan segment. We liked the G70 when it launched for 2018, and I'm sure we're going to have plenty to praise when the refresh arrives in 2022. But by then, the G70 will have shed the one significant feature that set it apart from the crowd, and will be left as a less funky, more driver-oriented complement to the Lexus IS and, perhaps, the upcoming Acura TLX.
2020 Genesis G70 2.0T: What To Expect For now, you've got one-and-a-half model years to pick up the 2.0T with three pedals, if you so desire. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at a stout 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, conceivably compelling figures for something with both a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Even Genesis realizes this should be alluring for an enthusiast, so checking the box for the stick also forcibly checks the box for the G70's Sport trim, adding a limited slip differential, Brembo brakes, and summer tires to the mix.
This is all excellent news, right up until you take it out for your first on-ramp blast. I don't know how Genesis managed to make 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet feel like a nice, round 200 in each category, but based on my test drive, it feels significantly down on torque from a dig. Instrumented testing from our buds over at Motor Trend revealed the G70 2.0T with the six-speed manual transmission takes an astounding 7.2 seconds from 0-60 mph. I'm not usually one to call something that can do the deed in less than 8.5 seconds "slow," but essentially the premium leaders in the segment—BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz—typically handle that scramble in less than six seconds.
2020 Genesis G70 2.0T: Slower Than Expected There's significant turbo lag from the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and when the impeller does get with the program, it's not revelatory or thrilling; even during full-throttle pulls, it never feels anything short of a steady, relatively slow climb. According to Genesis, peak power arrives at 6,200 rpm—no surprise there—but all 260 pound-feet are apparently on tap from 1,400 rpm through 4,000 rpm. Could have fooled me—there isn't much happening until the needle swings to the middle of the tach.
It's not as if it's much fun poking the engine through the range, either. The manual G70 has obnoxiously dull initial throttle tip-in, which, when combined with a vague clutch and apparent lack of low-down torque, leads to more-than-should-be-necessary clutch slip, herky-jerky starts, outright stalls, or a combination of all three.
Of course, operator error is always a potential part of the equation, but a quick seat-swap with a coworker confirmed at least the throttle tuning wasn't my imagination. Things get a little better in the Sport driving mode, but not so much that it fixes the dead zone entirely. Meanwhile, the shifter feels like something from a non-performance Elantra, which is not to say it's egregiously cheap or clumsy, but it doesn't really match the G70's premium/luxury intentions, especially with somewhat rubbery engagement and a plastic-topped knob.
Again, this hurts to write. I like the Genesis G70 a great deal, especially in 3.3T form. It's a fantastic little sports sedan for the money, and if I were in the market for a professional-appearing daily commuter, it would be near the top of the list. It's just such a shame the less-than-stellar stickshift G70 is the one to shut the door on the manual rear-wheel drive sport sedan species in the U.S.

Acura’s NSX Hybrid Sports Car Gains Immunity Through 2022
If you lie awake at night worrying about the fate of low-sales-volume, high-performance supercars, well, you should probably cut that out. There’s a lot more pressing issues facing the world today. And besides, you can stop fretting over at least one such sports car—the Acura NSX, at least for a couple of years. A leak from an internal Acura dealer webinar revealed a chart detailing some of the automaker’s product plans for the next few years. A notable inclusion was the NSX, which is represented as part of the lineup all the way through 2022.
Look, supercars that cost a lot to develop and produce while selling in small numbers don’t exactly represent slam-dunk business cases, thus threatening their very existence, and the NSX is an extreme example. Acura sold a whopping 238 copies of the car in 2019—hardly a sales hit, especially given how Porsche managed to move almost 10,000 911s in the same year. And yet, somehow, the NSX is being kept around for at least two more model years.
We reached out to Acura for more details, and this is what it had to say in response:
“We’ve expressed Acura’s steadfast commitment to Precision Crafted Performance since the launch of the second generation NSX. While this presentation is intended for Acura dealers and is not all-encompassing or definitive, it does demonstrate that we intend to deliver on that brand promise, step-by-step, starting with the 2021 TLX.”
Okay, so that doesn’t really clear things up, but neither does it deny the basic idea that the NSX isn’t in immediate danger. What neither the leak nor Acura’s response sheds any more light on is whether or not we’ll see the much rumored, higher-performance NSX Type-R in that two year time span (or ever). It is possible that plans for it were simply left out. As Acura said, the chart you see before you isn’t definitive.
We’ve been hot and cold on the NSX since it launched in 2017. Initially, we felt it could be sharper, quicker—more exotic, basically. Acura addressed some of that concern with some fine tuning as part of a 2019 refresh for the NSX, and the supercar now feels more of a piece, more worth its price tag, and a real contender its crowded corner of the sports car market. It’s good to know the NSX will (probably) be with us for a little while longer, then, and we look forward to whatever else Acura has in store for its novel sports car.

2021 BMW 4 Series revealed with mild-hybrid power and, uh, that face
Yes, that face. BMW From its turbocharged powertrains to its robust cabin tech to its advanced driver-assistance systems, there are a lot of reasons to like the 2021 4 Series, which BMW officially revealed Tuesday. But the one thing everyone's going to get hung up on is the styling -- specifically, that enormous grille.

Follow your nose
Yes, the 2021 BMW 4 Series has the enlarged kidneys first seen on the Concept 4 showcar from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as the all-electric i4. It's definitely... a look. And it's one we don't like, at least in photos. BMW says the grille "is framed by surfaces with a three-dimensional mesh structure," so there's at least some interesting detail, though it kind of loses any luster it might've had by bolting the European front plate in the middle. (It's going to look awful in US press fleet spec, with a bright yellow New Jersey plate smack dab in the middle.)The 2021 4 Series will be offered in 430i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive models, the latter of which gets darker exterior trim and larger side air intakes on the front fascia. LED headlights are standard across all models, and the shape just doesn't work with those giant buck teeth in the middle. Compared to an equivalent 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series is 2.2 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2.2 inches lower. But it rides on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. See how it stacks up to its rivals in our spec comparison.Luckily, the rest of the 4 Series looks pretty darn good, with a tapering roofline similar to that of the larger 8 Series coupe. All 4 Series coupes come standard with 18-inch wheels, though a variety of 19-inch options are available, as are M Sport brakes with either blue or red calipers, an aero kit and a rear lip spoiler. The LED taillights have an interesting light signature not unlike that of the recently revealed 2021 Acura TLX, and honestly, we think the new 4 Series looks best from the rear three-quarter view.

Step inside, and the 4 Series' design is far less polarizing. The cabin is largely the same as what you'll find in the 3 Series sedan -- the 4 Series' four-door sibling -- with leather surfaces available in a range of colors, flush-mounted controls on the center console and several different wood and metal inlay options.
